What Length Should I Order? A Stylist’s Guide to Choosing the Right Extension Length

What Length Should I Order? A Stylist’s Guide to Choosing the Right Extension Length.

One of the most common questions we get from both stylists and clients is:

“What length of extensions should I get?”

And while it’s tempting to go long and dramatic, choosing the right length is key to ensuring a flawless, natural-looking blend.

At Muse Hair Pro, our rule of thumb is simple—but powerful:

The “Double It” Rule

Take the client’s shortest layer at the crown. Double that length. That’s the longest you should go.

For example:

If the shortest layer on top is 8 inches, the maximum extension length should be 16 inches.

Why? Because anything longer than double the length of their shortest layer will usually:

• Look stringy or “melty” toward the bottom

• Fail to blend with their natural hair

• Draw attention to the extensions instead of creating a seamless finish

Why This Rule Works

When you stay within this range:

• The blend looks soft and believable

• You avoid that harsh “shelf” or broomstick effect

• Styling becomes easier and more versatile

• Clients get compliments on their hair, not their extensions

Remember: extensions are meant to enhance, not overpower.

What If My Client Wants Extra Length?

If a client insists on going longer than what’s ideal, make sure to:

• Layer the extensions intentionally to bridge the gap between their natural length and the longer pieces

• Add a few extra grams of hair to avoid stringiness at the ends

• Educate them on the styling maintenance required to keep it looking natural

Recap

✔️ Start with the shortest layer at the crown

✔️ Double it — that’s your ideal max length

✔️ Anything longer risks a poor blend

✔️ Educate your client on the “why” — they’ll thank you for it!
