Summertime Extension Care

Picture this.

The sun is out, you’re by the pool or on the water. Summer is here and you have the hair of your dreams.

But as the seasons change, so does your hair’s needs.

Here’s 5 tips to help you maintain your extensions in the summertime.

Hydration is key—

Just like your natural hair, extensions can get dry in the summer heat. Make sure you're always using sulfate free, hydrating shampoo and conditioner for the warmer months. Leave-in conditioners and hair oils can also help to keep them moisturized.

Protect from the sun—

UV rays can damage both your natural hair and extensions. Wear a hat or use a UV protectant spray when you're out in the sun. Think of it like sunscreen for your hair!

Gentle brushing—

Keep your hair detangled as much as possible. Use a wide-tooth comb or a or boar bristle brush. Start from the ends and work your way up to avoid pulling on or damaging the extensions.

Be careful with chlorine and saltwater—

Chlorine and saltwater can dry out and damage extensions. If possible, put your hair into a protective style, like a braid or high bun, and keep it out of the water completely. But if you can’t resist going for a dip, wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner before swimming. Then wash your hair as soon as possible after swimming.

Check the ingredients in your sunscreen—

Speaking of sunscreen, Avobenzone and Octocrylene are ingredients commonly found in chemical sunscreen that can cause discoloration in hair extensions. They can turn particularly blonde extensions a pinkish-orange color. To stay on the safe side, swap your chemical sunscreen to a mineral sunscreen.
