Extension Maintenance 101: Tools, Tips & Must-Knows
Your extensions are an investment—and like anything you love, they deserve the right care. With just a few simple habits, you can keep them looking fresh, healthy, and beautiful for as long as possible. Here’s how we recommend caring for your Muse HairPro extensions at home.
Washing Your Extensions the Right Way
To keep both your scalp and your extensions healthy, aim to wash your hair twice a week. This is the sweet spot—frequent enough to stay clean, but not so often that it dries out your extensions.
Before washing, always brush out any tangles using the Muse HairPro Detangler Brush to prevent matting.
When you’re washing, remember:
• Always wash in a downward motion
• Use lukewarm water
• Massage your scalp—don’t scrub
The goal is to be as gentle as possible, especially around the attachment points. If your hair still feels oily or heavy after one wash, go in for a second round.
And this part is non-negotiable—use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Also, never use “repair” or “strengthening” products on your extensions. These often contain protein, which can make extensions dry, brittle, and prone to breakage over time.
Brushing 101
For sew-in wefts:
Expose one row at a time, hold the seam with one hand, and gently brush with the other. Always start from the bottom and work your way up. And remember—never brush directly over the seam, especially with hand-tied wefts. It can wear down the stitching and reduce longevity.
For K-Tips:
Use the Muse Boar Bristle Brush to brush above the bonds, keeping your natural shed flowing downward to prevent tangling with nearby bonds.
To brush below the bonds, use your Muse Detangler Brush, holding the bond at the root and gently brushing through the ends.
Both brushes are available in our store and are must-haves for extension maintenance.
Caring for your extensions doesn’t have to be complicated—you just need the right tools, the right products, and a gentle hand. With the Muse HairPro routine, you’ll extend the life of your hair and keep every strand looking salon-fresh.
